An aspiring country music singer and rapper has been charged with attempted murder after shooting a homeless man who she says threatened her life during a late night row in Nashville. 

Katie Layne Quackenbush, 26, shot Gerald Melton, 54, twice during an altercation outside her Porsche SUV in Nashville's Music Row on August 26.

It was 3am and Melton, who was trying to sleep, complained to Katie and a friend who was with her that her music was too loud, according to police.

The pair had been at a nightclub and she was bringing her friend back to her own car when the argument ensued. 

Police say that after shouting at one another, Melton retreated but Quackenbush got out of her $60,000 Porsche Cayenne and fired two shots at him, wounding him in the stomach.

Quackenbush, an aspiring country singer and rapper and mother-of-one, fled the scene afterwards to go and have breakfast at a restaurant with her friend.

Melton was taken to the hospital where he remains. His condition is not known. 

The next day, after police issued an appeal to find 'two blonde women' suspected of shooting him, she handed herself in to police. Her version of events differ from the one given by police. 

According to her father Jesse, a personal injury and criminal defense attorney in Amarillo, Texas, Quackenbush feared for her life when she fired her gun. 

He said she and her friend had been at a nightclub and that his daughter was taking her friend back to her car when they saw Melton accosting another group of girls. 

As they pulled up, they noticed this homeless guy out ahead.

'He was yelling and screaming at another group of girls which looked like sorority girls from the local university. 

'It seemed he was getting into a physical altercation with one of them,' Mr. Quackenbush told DailyMail.com on Tuesday. 

He claimed Melton then approached his daughter's car and started 'screaming and banging on the windows'. 

He called her a 'sand n***er w**re' and threatened to kill her if she did not turn her music down, he added. 

 

The 26-year-old is an aspiring singer and rapper in Nashville, Tennessee. She is seen above in images from her music videos and YouTube channels.

Frightened for her life, he said his daughter hopped out of the vehicle and fired two 'warning shots' from her gun but did not intend to strike the man. 

'She said "I have a gun" twice. He came at her, she fired what she thought was a warning shot and fired a second one when he kept coming at her. 

'She ran back to the car and left with her friend,' her father said.

The pair then went to a restaurant to have breakfast and Quackenbush 'kept her composure probably better than any police officer would have,' her father said. 

When they returned to the scene so that her friend could finally retrieve her car, it was swarming with police and had been taped off. 

'The next day they're hearing in the news that police are looking for two blonde females who shot a homeless man,' Mr. Quackenbush continued. 

The woman's father said she was just like any other struggling musician in Nashville and that she acted in self-defense. She is pictured in a rap video on her YouTube channel

Upon his advice, his daughter contacted police and handed in the gun which, her father said, she has for self-protection. 

Quackenbush moved to Nashville from her native Texas to 'like a lot of people', pursue a career in country music, her father said. 

She has a five-year-old son who, despite 'struggling to make a living', she puts through private school.

In 2013, Quackenbush was arrested for assault causing bodily injury after a 'squabble' with her mother. The charges were later dropped. 

Her father said police in Nashville are using her as a 'poster child' for the city's ongoing homeless problems. 

He believes she is being unfairly prosecuted and that authorities are intentionally ignoring any threat Melton may have posed. 

'The guy's obviously schizophrenic in the opinion of my daughter and her friend and other people,' Mr. Quackenbush said. 

Melton's criminal record in Nashville dates back to 2014 and includes several arrests for criminal trespassing and failing to appear in court. 

Quackenbush was released from jail on a $25,000 bond and is awaiting her next court appearance.

She goes by the artist name Katie Layne and previously uploaded her collection of rap and country music songs to YouTube.

A Tennessee woman arrested Monday for allegedly shooting a homeless man after he asked her to move her Porsche from his sleeping area has a violent past.

Katie Layne Quackenbush is accused of shooting Gerald Melton on Aug. 26 after the two argued over where she parked in Nashville. Melton had been sleeping on a sidewalk when he “became disturbed by exhaust fumes and loud music” from Quackenbush’s car at 3 a.m., according to Nashville police. The two allegedly began arguing when Melton asked that the vehicle be moved.
Melton left the area and did not block Quackenbush from leaving, according to the police affidavit. The two began arguing again when he returned to the spot where he had been trying to sleep, police said. This time Quackenbush allegedly got out of her car with a gun and fired two shots before getting back in her car and leaving.

Melton, 54, remains hospitalized after being shot twice in the abdomen.

This isn’t Quackenbush’s first run-in with the law. Quackenbush was arrested on misdemeanor domestic violence-related assault charges in Texas in 2013 that were later dismissed. Quackenbush was arrested last December for striking a woman in the head with a drinking glass and charged with misdemeanor assault, according to court documents.

Quackenbush’s father, Jesse Quackenbush told The Daily Beast that she was acting in self defense after Melton “accosted” his daughter and her friend and threatened to kill them.

“What you have here is a 26-year old woman whose life is basically ruined on an international basis because of knee jerk and hillbilly cops in Nashville that rush to judgement before they even complete their investigation,” he said.

Quackenbush had been out with a friend in downtown Nashville, who was an “eyewitness to this event,” Jesse said. Since the friend’s car was parked about six blocks away from the club they were at, Quackenbush offered to drop the friend off at her car.

They continued to talk in Quackenbush’s car when Melton began “screaming and yelling” explicit threats “at the top of his lungs” and threatened to kill the two women, Jesse said. Melton then allegedly walked away to begin yelling at another group of girls nearby.

After Melton walked away, Jesse said his daughter took out her gun to escort the friend to her car. When Quackenbush walked around her car Melton allegedly began to “accost” her again. She then told Melton twice that she had a gun and to stay away.

“He kept coming at her and increasing the volume of his voice and she thought what she thought was a warning shot would make him run away,” Jesse said. “She purposefully aimed away from him but unfortunately she hit him. And he kept coming so she shot again, again a warning shot, down at a downward trajectory and thinking that would scare him away.”

Jesse said his daughter “closed her eyes when she shot both times.”

Melton allegedly continued to come at the Quackenbush so she got back inside her car and drove away. He said his daughter turned herself in and has been cooperating with police since the incident.
“She was merely trying to defend herself,” Jesse said. “She wasn’t trying to hurt anyone to begin with, especially not trying to kill someone.”

Jesse said Quackenbush is the single mother of a 5-year old son and moved to Nashville to launch her career as a musician.

Surveillance video where homeless man was shot shows potential witnesses

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) - The News 4 I-Team obtained exclusive surveillance video of the Music Row neighborhood where a homeless man was shot, and it reveals many people in the area who could be potential witnesses.

The video, recorded on Aug. 26 starting at 3 a.m., shows Chet Atkins Place and its cross street, 19th Avenue South.

Metro police report at 901 19th Avenue South, on that same date and time, 26-year-old Katie Quackenbush shot 54-year-old Gerald Melton twice in the stomach.

Police said Quackenbush, charged with attempted murder, got into an argument with Melton.
The surveillance video shows at roughly 3:19 a.m., a fire truck rushes to the scene followed by several Metro police cruisers.

But the video shows in the minutes before police arrive, two people can be seen walking directly from the location of the shooting, and another man can be seen walking down Chet Atkins Place.

Several cars also drive in that area at the same time, all indicating there could be several witnesses to corroborate either Quackenbush or Melton’s versions of what happened.

Metro police confirm that another witness working security in that area alerted investigators to the shooting.

The I-Team has also obtained video of Melton, recorded in December 2016. In the video, Melton is seen playing a guitar and singing.

The video was made by Music Row veteran Sharon Corbitt-House, who started a Youcaring page to help Melton.

“He lived in the parking lot behind our building for about a year,” Corbitt-House said. “I had no clue that he was as talented as he was.”

That Youcaring page did raise more than $2,000 that Corbitt-House said helped Melton to move into temporary housing on Murfreesboro Road. But not long after, he was back living on the streets of Music Row.

“Did you ever find him to be volatile? Did you ever find him to be a person that would get angry quickly?” the I-Team asked.

“I never experienced it,” Corbitt-House said. “I had a heard a couple of people had had incidents with him where he raised his voice and had gotten angered.”

Metro police have charged a woman with attempted murder for allegedly shooting a homeless man near Music Row last month.

Police say the victim, 54-year-old Gerald Melton, was trying to sleep on the sidewalk in the 900 block of 19th Avenue South around 3 a.m. when he noticed exhaust fumes and loud music coming from an SUV.

Melton asked the driver, 26-year-old Katie Quackenbush, to move the vehicle. The two then began arguing and yelling at each other.

Melton said he walked back to where he was sleeping when police say Quackenbush got out of the SUV armed and fired two shots at Melton.

Melton suffered a critical abdomen wound and remains hospitalized at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Quackenbush’s bond is set at $25,000.

The really sad part of the story found below is that even with all of the technology in place these days, society is digressing.

Sure we have laws to protect and keep some sort of order, put what about those who find themselves in situations that society - "Haves" & "Have-more" - DICTATE their existence.

More people have met with harm by the "Haves" &/or "Have-more", than by those living rough on the streets, under bridges, in wooden areas and/or anywhere they can.

To Jay Casey, please get out of your so called "safe zone" for more than charity benefits, for a "feel good" feeling for ones self and/or for organizations that have seem to find ways to make profitable businesses out of those of us who find ourselves as being "The Houseless". Then maybe, yes just maybe, your misguided fears would meet reality!

You can only shove humans out of existence so far before one day what society has created will need ALL of those who actually seek a more amicable existence, to become real and be about it.

Homeless camping out along popular Dallas trail

DALLAS — Over the last few months, homeless camps had almost become a fixture along the stretch of White Rock Creek Trail that passes under Skillman Street, north of White Rock Lake.

Men were sleeping within just a few feet of one of the city's most popular jogging and biking trails.

The campers included 43-year-old Michael Eubanks and a buddy of his named Charlie. Eubanks said a City of Dallas employee came through on Tuesday morning and told them to leave.

"Man, a dude drove by in a Parks and Recreation truck and said, 'Hey, if y'all don't move, the police are gonna come and make y'all move.'"

So they moved. And they weren't alone.

Pictures snapped along the trail Tuesday morning showed another homeless camp under another bridge just a little further north.

"There's kids out here, and if you're trying to run early in the morning, I have concern for my wife and other people out here," said Jay Casey, as he jogged on the trail training for an Ironman Triathlon. "But I know they need a place to stay, and we've gotta do something to help them."

Some homeless are hard to help, and Michael Eubanks may be one of them.

He's been in and out of prison, struggles with his temper, and he likes to drink.

He and Charlie lost their apartment, then chose to live on the trail, under the Skillman bridge for the last couple of months, saying shelters aren't for them.

"I know how it feels to be institutionalized, and for me — in shelters — I feel like I'm closed in, boxed in," Eubanks said. "I like being free and open."

Shelters in Dallas are reporting increased demand over the last few months, mostly from veterans and women with children. One shelter reports an 18 percent increase over demand from two years ago.

Mike Faenza, President and CEO of the Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance, said the city has made great strides, reducing chronic homelessness by 66 percent since 2004. He said there is still room to grow, but concedes it's a struggle to deal with people like Eubanks.

"There are people choosing to live outside, and, for the most part, those people would not be there if it weren't for issues of alcoholism and addiction," Faenza said.

Eubanks showed us around the camp he cleaned up after the city asked him to move, showing where he stashed his blankets and where he and Charlie slept.

"I like being open and free," he reiterated. He also wondered what prompted the order from the parks department.

"Ain't nobody bother me, and we don't bother nobody," Eubanks said. "We eat our food, we drink our beer. You know what I'm saying? What are we harming? I don't understand that."

"We're gonna find us another spot," he pledged,saying it won't be in a shelter. He was thinking they may try the other side of the same bridge.

"I ain't bothering you," Eubanks said. "Leave me alone; let me eat my food and drink my beer. I just wanna go to sleep."

It was on FOX 7 where you first saw the story of a senior citizen, whose home was smashed in by a car this weekend. Well now because of that incident that woman could soon be homeless.

When FOX 7 first showed up Sunday to Bertha Haywood's east Austin rental home she was in good spirits just hours after a car crashed through her wall. No one was injured inside, but the driver got away.

Two days later Haywood's positive attitude has turned to frustration.

Haywood says her landlord put her up in a hotel nearby, but after two days the hotel room she is staying in will no longer be paid for.

"My landlord called me about I'd say three hours ago and told me that she couldn't do anything about my staying anywhere else," said Haywood, "She said now I have to fend for myself."

Haywood says she has to be out of the hotel by noon Wednesday. We were unable to reach her landlord for comment.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - A car crashed into Stacey Davis’ apartment Monday, and now her family is not getting the help they need.

The crash left a hole not just in her home, but in her family’s lives.

“I just don't understand how there's nothing no one can do,” said Davis. “There's a hole in my bedroom wall.”

Davis is a single mom with nine-month-old twins and a five year old. In the days since the crash, she has tried all she can think of to find them a new place to live.

“I've tried social services, which referred me to public housing, which informed me there's a waiting list,” Davis said. “I've tried the insurance agency, there’s nothing they can do. I've tried the Red Cross.

Davis’ landlord did offer her a temporary place in Norfolk, but she has no car. Her life is in Portsmouth.

The Red Cross can't help Davis because technically she has a place where she can stay. But Davis isn’t asking for a hand-out, just a hand to help her up.

“Has anybody been in this situation before? What would you do if you were me?”, she said.

No one can tell Davis how long it will take to fix the hole in her home, but for the sake of her kids she can't wait much longer to fill the hole in their lives.

The Red Cross does not provide transportation, but said it will make a referral to Davis of another organization that might be able to help.

"The Houseless" are often regarded as not such good citizens, but wait till you watch the video of this "Houseless" man in El Paso, Texas who cared enough to do what some who have a place to live, would not.
The man who showed respect for the United States of America's flag was Gustus Bozarth.
 His patriotism occurred outside about the property of Meti Corporation.

If you care about the United States of America and for all of those who have served under and/or stood up for the U.S.A. flag, then this may just bring tears to your eyes.

It is not known if this patriot is a Veteran, yet you can tell from his care that he holds respect for those who have served.

See fellow U.S.A. citizens and humans, how about everyone stop the discriminating, defaming and/or derogatory thoughts of those who fall victim of being "The Houseless".

WELL?   

 

This man should be commended for caring enough to brave the weather to protect the red, white and blue colors the United States of America.
We all need to care enough for the United States of America and not just leave it up to our fine, brave men and women who put on the uniform of the United States of America military.
